Bitapaka War Cemetery

General Yamamoto’s Bunker
bunkerFrom this underground command post, General Yamamoto directed the Japanese assault on to mainland Papua New Guinea culminating in the Battle of the Coral Sea. This decisive naval and air engagement halted the Japanese surge in the South Pacific and to mainland Australia.
Japanese Tunnels
tunnel Over 700 km of underground tunnels honeycomb the cliffs and hills around Rabaul’s Simpson Harbour. The Japanese forces, in a vain endeavour to hide from Australian, NZ and American bombers, built hospitals, barge bays and accommodation galleries within this complex.
Deep Sea Fishing
fishingThe seas surrounding the Gazelle Peninsula offer the opportunity to fish for marlin or sail fish as well as less exotic marine game or trawling for tuna. Boat charters available through the Rapopo Dive Centre.
Volcano Tour
